GLOBAL SURVIVORS FUND

October 29, 2019

On the 30th October, Dr. Denis Mukwege and Ms. Nadia Murad, 2018 co- recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize will officially launch the Global Survivors Fund in New York City at UN Headquarters at the Commemoration of the 10- year Anniversary of the Mandate on Sexual Violence in Conflict.
The Global Survivors Fund will bring diverse stakeholders together in an innovative partnership to address the needs of survivors. The Fund approaches its work from a survivor- centric perspective – reparations and other forms of redress are a “right” as noted by international law.
The Fund is growing in recognition and support. During the G7 meeting in August, French President Emmanuel Macron announced France’s support by committing 6 million Euros to the Fund. EU Council President Donald Tusk also expressed the EU’s support by pledging 2 million Euros.
“We, the victims of sexual violence, are stigmatised by our own families, by our communities, by our society and by our institutions. This forces us to be silent. Reparations are a matter of justice. – Fulvia, Survivor of Sexual Violence, Colombia
Background
In a historic moment on December 10, 2018, Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad received the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to fight sexual violence as a weapon of war. Recognising the importance of providing survivors of conflict-related sexual violence with reparations and other forms of redress, they joined together to help realise a vision long held by survivors. SEMA, the global survivors network supported by the Mukwege Foundation, has been advocating for reparations for over two years. The Fund draws its mission and vision from the work of the network and builds on the advocacy efforts of the office of the SRSG-CRSV and Ms. Pamila Patten, the current SRSG.
Mission
The Global Survivors Fund is an innovative, survivor-centric mechanism whose mission is to ensure survivors of conflict-related sexual violence have access to reparations and other forms of redress, globally.
If you would like to know more about this innovative fund, its organization and how it works, please let us know. We have English, French, Dutch and Italian speaking representatives.
We can possibly also make arrangements for you to speak with a survivor based on availability.
